A picture says a thousand words and, in some cases, can be worth even more for a good cause.

The winners of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation’s  2017 Christmas Card Design Contest have been announced, part of a fundraising campaign that will see proceeds from the cards go towards helping to build Lions Gate’s upcoming high-tech medical and surgical centre.

It’s the fifth year the foundation has held the Christmas card design contest, open to youth from grades 4 to 12.

The contest was announced in September and closed Oct. 16, with the winners being announced recently.

Kaitlyn McAloney, a West Vancouver Secondary student in Grade 9, and Paige Eskes, a Lynn Valley Elementary Grade 5 student, had their designs chosen out of around 50 entrants to be featured in Christmas and holiday cards that will be sold at the hospital in order to raise money for the new centre.

Yolanda Brooks, LGH Foundation communications manager, said McAloney and Eskes, whose card designs feature boats in one and bears in the other, were selected because of their pieces’ heavy focus on the North Shore.

“We were looking for something with a North Shore flavour and both of them hit that very well,” Brooks said. “They were just bright and cheerful and they were card designs that make you smile and think of home.”

McAloney and Eskes both recieved Park Royal gift cards worth $100 for their efforts.

According to a LGH Foundation release, the cards are sold in mixed packs of 12 and cost $20 for a single pack, or $50 for three packs.

The cards can be purchased at the foundation in the main lobby of Lions Gate Hospital on 13th Street.

The new medical and surgical centre is a planned 200,000-square-foot facility that will provide 108 private rooms and ensuite facilities.

A $100-million community fundraising campaign for the project was launched in February with the goal of breaking ground in the next few years.
