Cops for Cancer cyclists are welcomed by Braemar Elementary School students

It's a dry and relatively warm September fall morning – the perfect weather for riding a bike, or for standing outside cheering as loudly as possible for others who are riding their bikes for a good cause.

On September 26, 2016, students in the North Vancouver School District were honoured with visits from the Cops for Cancer Tour de Coast riders. Cops for Cancer is an annual event that takes place each fall, when more than one-hundred law enforcement and emergency services personnel from across British Columbia cycle for up to two weeks through areas of the province in support of raising money to battle childhood cancer. The Tour de Coast riders peddle 800 km for nine days from Gibson, through Pemberton, along the sea-to-sky corridor, and then down across the Metro Vancouver area. This year's team includes three riders from the North Vancouver RCMP detachment and two from West Vancouver Police.

As part of their tour, the Tour de Coast riders visited several schools in the North Vancouver School District that have raised money for the cause. Both Braemar Elementary and Canyon Heights Elementary students enthusiastically supported Cops for Cancer this year. Canyon Heights students raised nearly $500 and Braemar students raised an astounding $2300, which is being divided between Cops for Cancer and the Terry Fox Foundation.

"Part of our Braemar Cares initiative is to support important causes like this and I am so proud of our students for really embracing this opportunity to help other children in need," said Sanjeet, Principal, Braemar Elementary School.

The energy when the Cops for Cancer riders visit schools is palpable. At Braemar Elementary, all of the students gathered outside to welcome the riders. There were hoots and hollers, complete with plenty of laughter and smiles – from both the students and the cyclists.
