In late June 2016, the North Vancouver School District's Education Services Centre was gifted with the Squamish Nation traditional name Chílhiṅup, meaning 'High Ground'. The North Vancouver School District works collaboratively with the Squamish (Skwxwú7mesh) Nation, Tsleil-Waututh Nation, Metis Nation of BC, and other Aboriginal peoples living in North Vancouver to ensure success for students of Aboriginal ancestry. In addition to this important work, the North Vancouver School District is committed to reconciliation and upholding the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee 2015 Report. The learning environment improves for all students and staff when there is increased understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal culture, history and ways of knowing.

In addition to the naming of the Education Services Centre, outgoing Superintendent John Lewis also received a traditional Skwxwú7mesh name. Lewis, who was an educator in the North Vancouver School District for 37 years (with the last 10 years serving as Superintendent), prior to his retirement in June 2016, received the name Ha7lh Siyáẏ, meaning 'Good Friend'. The naming of the Education Services Centre and of Superintendent Lewis was an incredibly special experience for the North Vancouver School District.
