Back in September, I had heard that there were a few elementary schools in the district playing a short Spring Ultimate season. I had a parent, Maggie Murch, who was keen on getting a team going at Cleveland.

Along with fellow teacher and current Ultimate player, Devon McHugh we have formed a team. We have over 20 grade 5, 6 and 7 girls and boys playing on mixed teams every Thursday and some on Mondays in May. This is an intra-district multi-age, both gender Ultimate Frisbee mini tournament.

The other North Vancouver School District teams listed are Seymour Heights, Boundary, Ross Road, Capilano and Norgate. The mini tournaments typically have about 4-6 participating teams from two or three schools, each game lasting about 25 minutes. One of the unique aspects of Ultimate is that there is no referee, so students must be very courteous and show strong sport ethic.

It is also very inclusive in the sense that students don’t need to begin with a lot of skill. Students who have never played can easily learn and feel successful and have fun.

On May 10th was the second tournament of three at Eldon Park which took place after school. We already played matches with Island Pacific School and Kenneth Gordon School. Our next tournament takes place next week Thursday.

It’s very encouraging to see so many students participating and enjoying this sport. We hope to attract even more students for next year to see Ultimate grow at the elementary level.
