By Trevor Baker & Denise La Prairie, Cleveland Elementary School
The Cleveland Elementary School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) Club was first established in May of 2017.
The purpose behind the formation of a GSA club at the elementary level was to spread awareness of the inequalities and discrimination that have plagued members of the LGBTQ+ community, while promoting equality and acceptance of individuals.
To introduce the topic of the Cleveland Elementary GSA, Denise La Prairie and Trevor Baker presented the goals and objectives of the GSA for the Grade 6's, 7's and the Cleveland teaching staff.
The voluntary GSA club meets once a week to discuss what can be done to make the school community a more accepting place to learn and socialize for all of its members.
On May 19th, 2017, International Anti-Homophobia Day, Cleveland demonstrated its commitment to being a safe and caring school by inviting students to wear clothing of various rainbow colours to show their support.
The Pride flag was also raised on the flagpole alongside the Canadian flag for International Anti-Homophobia Day.
In the future, the Cleveland GSA plans to have guest speakers come present workshops and share stories with the club. Members will also become more involved with the rest of the school community by having discussions with primary students, participating in school wide assemblies, and integrating LGBTQ+ sensitivity lessons into the daily curriculum.
