Peer mediators make a difference
By Kat Robb, School Counsellor,  Ridgeway Elementary & Queensbury Elementary

At Ridgeway Elementary an eager group of grade six students, known as the Peer Mediators, dedicate one recess and one lunch block a week to support our younger students. They help students in kindergarten through grade three with problem solving and social difficulties. They deal with friendship issues and problems that arise with playground games, they help lonely students find friends and help create a culture of kindness at Ridgeway.

Our Peer Mediators are the first people our students see as they go out for break time, as the mediators are at the front doors greeting students as they head outside. The Peer Mediators have recently begun taking jump ropes, playground chalk and balls outside to help get more children involved in group activities - this has been a hit!

Why do they do it? Mostly they do it because they want to help make Ridgeway a great place for all students. They enjoy interacting with younger children and love to help. They are truly a huge asset to Ridgeway.
