NVSD’s 2017 Sustainability Cup is Underway

sustainabilitycup.JPG

Ten schools across the North Vancouver School District are competing in the first year of NVSD’s Sustainability Cup.  Wish the following schools luck as they compete to save energy and promote sustainability in their schools:
  • Brooksbank Elementary
  • Carisbrooke Elementary
  • Cove Cliff Elementary
  • Dorothy Lynas Elementary
  • Ecole Boundary Elementary
  • Handsworth Secondary
  • Highlands Elementary
  • Lynn Valley Elementary
  • Upper Lynn Elementary
  • Westview Elementary
December had the Energy Management Team busy connecting and kicking off the competition with most teams.  They met many excited students and heard lots of great sustainability ideas.

Joan Fawcett, at Westview Elementary, has planned her campaigns for the year and plans to continue building the green team she started up before the holidays.  Their team ran the Holiday Shutdown campaign by distributing checklists that helped teachers identify which electronics to turn off and unplug over the break.

Regardless of whether or not your school is participating in the challenge this year, be on the lookout for energy saving and sustainable activities at your school:
  • Sweater Day
  • Lights out Lunches
  • Spring Break Shutdown
  • Walking Wednesday
  • School Garden Program
Better yet, contact your school green team lead with any ideas you have on how your school can get involved and help win the Sustainability Cup.  Good luck to all of the competing schools!

About the Challenge

The Sustainability Cup runs from December 1st, 2016 to April 30th, 2017.  It is an opportunity to celebrate and recognize all of the excellent work already happening in the school district as seen in last year’s Sustainability Report. It involves assembling a school team and organizing sustainability activities in your school.

A Sustainability Cup trophy and two top prizes (first and second prize is $1,000 and $500 respectively) will be awarded to the schools with the highest number of participation and energy saving points.
Each school has been provided with the Sustainability Cup Toolkit and set of resources to make it easy to participate.
